Applications & Reactions
How Propane Gas (C₃H₈) is used across industries, with the key chemistry explained simply.
High-Temperature Industrial Combustion
Produces a hot, clean flame (up to 1,967°C with oxygen) for metal cutting, brazing, glass-blowing, and industrial furnace operations.
Complete combustion (2,220 kJ/mol)
C₃H₈ + 5O₂ → 3CO₂ + 4H₂O + Heat
Propylene Production (Cracking)
Thermally cracked at high temperatures to yield propylene, a critical monomer for polypropylene plastics, acrylics, and synthetic fibres.
Dehydrogenation / steam cracking
C₃H₈ → C₃H₆ + H₂
Autogas / Vehicle Fuel
Used as a cleaner-burning alternative to petrol and diesel in converted vehicles. Lower particulate and NOₓ emissions make it attractive for fleet operators.
Engine combustion
C₃H₈ + 5O₂ → 3CO₂ + 4H₂O + Heat
