What is it used for?
Applications & Reactions
How Carbon Dioxide (CO₂) is used across industries, with the key chemistry explained simply.
Beverage Carbonation
Dissolves under pressure into water and beverages to form carbonic acid, giving soft drinks, beer, and sparkling water their characteristic fizz and tangy taste.
Carbonation equilibrium
CO₂ + H₂O ⇌ H₂CO₃
Fire Suppression
Displaces oxygen around a fire, suffocating it without leaving residue. Ideal for electrical fires and server rooms where water damage must be avoided.
Physical fire suppression
CO₂ displaces O₂ → smothers combustion
MIG / TIG Welding (Shielding Gas)
Used alone or blended with argon as a shielding gas to protect the weld pool from atmospheric oxygen and nitrogen, producing clean, strong welds.
Dry Ice & Cold Chain
Compressed CO₂ solidifies at −78°C to form dry ice. Used to ship temperature-sensitive goods like vaccines, biologics, and premium frozen foods.
Sublimation point −78°C
CO₂(g) → CO₂(s) at −78°C
